From the end of 1806 through June 1807 Ostrołęka was occupied by French troops. On Feb. 15 and 16 a battle raged on the banks of the Narew and in Ostrołęka itself. The French won thanks to the French General Nicolas Charles Oudinot. For this reason, the name of the town appears on the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.
